If you are a new Stephen King addict I suggest the following 3 phases to provide you with a reading order.
I suggest you start with his stand-alone novels and read them in publishing order.
There is evolution in his writing style, and experimentation with characters and scenes that you’ll be able to observe if you do so.
Next, try out the first book in the Dark Tower series to see if that one grabs you (it’s not for everyone).
I suggest that you leave Stephen’s collections of short stories until last. Most are very cool, but they don’t have that depth and richness that you get with a novel (however some are very scary and you wonder at the mind it takes to dream up this stuff!)

Entire List of Stephen King Books By Publishing Date
I find this list interesting because you get to see just how consistent he is as an author. He pumps out at least 1 book year after year after year.
There are a few exceptions though, some years that are missing and you can’t help but wonder what he was up to in those years…
Was he working on something huge? Just taking a break? Hmmmm…

What Do You Think?
Do you have anything to add? Mention it in the comment section below.
When should I read King’s nonfiction books?
Are you drawn to any of them? https://stephenking.com/library/nonfiction/ His book about guns in the USA looks interesting.
I’ve put myself on a journey to read all of his published work; if that answers your question.
I would recommend ‘Danse Macabre’ for anyone interested in an overview of the horror genre. King discusses its roots and progression through literature as well as cinema. He also theorises about the appeal of horror. All in all, an entertaining and thought-provoking read.
Cool! Thanks Mark
What about 11/22/63?
Agreed, it’s not mentioned!
11/22/63 was published on November 8th, 2011.
Thanks for pointing that out! Fixed 🙂
This isn’t too important, but The Running Man wasn’t mentioned as a Richard Bachman book in the list.
Hmmm good point, thanks for pointing that out Miles
Are you going to add Gwendy’s Button?
ah! Thanks for the reminder Bob. Done!
I’ve read dr. sleep and I would say that it could classify as a sequel to the shining despite it not being classified as one
Sorry dude but from what I’ve seen advertised dr sleep is the sequel to the shining.
How come it’s spelled “Steven” in the subcategories?
Oh! Silly me. Fixed! Thanks for pointing that out Miles 🙂
King’s 2018 book, “The Outsider” isn’t added yet.
What about The Mist from 1980
Good point. It is inside a collection, so this morning I’ve expanded the collections so you can see the Novella’s inside each collection. Thanks for speaking up!
The Outsider (2018) needs to be added! Outstanding book.
ah! Done! Thanks Miles
What about If It Bleeds and The Sun Dog? You missed those 2.
oh! Thanks, I’ll take a look
